Transmission Print Portfolio builds and expands upon Transmission: Speaking & Listening (a series of Lectures and Publications edited by Dr Sharon Kivland, Dr Jaspar Joseph-Lester and Lesley Sanderson in conjunction with Site Gallery, Sheffield). The work in the portfolio along side the publications contribute to the critical debates surrounding the hierarchical relationship between visual, textual and spoken languages that concerns the contemporary artist.

The Invited artists were asked to produce a limited print or multiple in response to a particular theme. I adopted the unique role of Curator/Collaborator in order to facilitate the translation and production of the work. The methods used in realising the prints often involved incorporating written and spoken instruction or the translation of visual material. By using print and multiples to illustrate the dialogue within the practice the portfolios instigated a visual agenda that allowed for new images to emerge. The effectiveness and success of a print frequently relied upon the successful understanding of the different language used and the translation of meaning.

Transmission Portfolio I

The project provided an opportunity for the selected artists to consider the relationship between the visual, textual and spoken aspects of their practice. The exhibitions of the portfolio also provided a platform for high profile, well-established, mid career and young emerging, artists to exhibit together. The portfolio enabled the selected artists to consider their own practice and the ideas contained within each print to be expressed in a different discipline, often a medium that was initially foreign or unfamiliar. The structure of the project encouraged artist and curator to consider each limited edition to represent visually both a cognitive map of each artists conceptual/intellectual concern, as well as being a new work in its own right.
The exhibition of the portfolio alongside the Transmission; Speaking and Listening publication in London and Berlin allowed for the debate between the forms of language to be further developed and disseminated with an international audience. The portfolios themselves will form an important archive for future reference. The project was funded by the ADRC at Sheffield Hallam University along with the generous and voluntary contribution of time and materials from the artists involved.
